Introduction
The Hoover Anti-Twist Home is Hoover's entry into the cordless vacuum market. It's an affordable, quality vacuum that has good cleaning power, a long life battery and great charge time.
Released in mid 2022, this cordless vacuum has a detachable long neck so can be used in both handheld and upright mode. There are 2 models available, the base model known as HF522STH H-Free 500 Home and the pet-friendly model known as HF522STP H-Free 500 Pets.
Performance
Both the Home and Pets models come with the same performance. With a motor packing 75 watts of power it isn't the strongest cordless vacuum available, but it certainly isn't the weakest either.
Both models come with 'auto' mode, which runs at an efficient manner, and a boost mode which forces the motor to work harder. You'll of course get less battery life when running in boost mode, but it is only designed to be used on stubborn spots.
The Anti-Twist Home from Hoover works just as well on carpets and rugs as it does on hard floors. We test all of our vacuums on a combination of hard wood and stone floors and low, medium and high pile carpets and rugs.
Both the Pet and Home models worked well on all apart from the high pile carpet, where the motorised head would get tangled. This is quite a common issue with vacuums of this nature, so it isn't something to be concerned with.
Design and Features
The cordless Hoover has a similar design to most cordless vacuums. Both Home and Pets models have the same overall design, which has the body of the vacuum in a compact unit at the top, with a long shaft leading to a brush head on the floor.
The shaft can be removed, and different attachments can be added to the main body (and the shaft if you need to reach places). Again, this is pretty standard across most cordless vacuums, but it works well.
Upright storage
A big bonus for the cordless Hoover is its ability to lock itself upright for easy storage, something a lot of cordless vacuums with a similar design have failed to tackle. This is likely helped by the lightweight of the top unit, which helps prevent it toppling. Obviously this is a great feature for those who want to store the vacuum in an upright position when not in use.
Headlight
The motorised brush head has an LED strip light that illuminates in a straight line ahead of the vacuum.
This headlight isn't for the nocturnal vacuum ninjas amongst us. Instead, it's meant to be used to help you see under furniture and highlight dust on hard floors akin to the Dyson green laser. Dyson's green laser is substantially better at highlighting dust on hard floors than Hoover's attempt, but it's also 5 times the price. We'll let you make up your own minds about whether it's worth the extra!
Weight
The Hoover cordless is light, really light. In fact it's the first thing you notice when you start using it. Weighing in at a measly 2.5kg it's one of the lightest cordless vacuums on the market.
Weight in cordless vacuums is a strange trade-off. Heavier vacuums are big and cumbersome, making them difficult to maneuverer, especially if you're reaching higher areas of a room. However, the weight in a cordless vacuum comes from a combination of the battery, motor and dust bin, three things that you want to be as big and as powerful as possible.
It's a difficult balance to get right, especially as each consumer has slightly different requirements. The Hoover's suction is lower than competitors, but that leads to a lighter vacuum with a longer lasting battery. It also has a smaller dust bin, but that might be just fine for those with smaller homes or who vacuum more frequently.
Maneuverability
Weight and maneuverability quite often go hand in hand. The Hoover is light, very light, which makes it very easy to maneuveur around the home.
If you're looking for a vacuum that can easily reach high corners of a room, or that is great for cleaning stairs then it may well be perfect for you.
Battery Life
Battery life is one of the most important factors to consider when choosing a cordless vacuum. The Hoover Anti Twist Home and Pet models both have excellent battery life at around 45 minutes in standard/automatic mode, and 20-25 minutes in boost mode.
The battery is easily removable, something that isn't possible in a lot of cordless vacuums, which means it's possible to buy a spare battery in case you have a large home that requires multiple charges.
Hoover state 45 minutes for the battery in automatic mode, and 25 minutes in boost mode. These quoted numbers assume you aren't using the powered motorised brush head, which adds extra drain on the motor and batteries from the brush and headlight. In our tests the cordless Hoover still had great battery life but it was much lower than the advertised numbers at around 30 minutes in automatic mode when using the motorised head, with the occasional boost mode usage.
To be clear, this is very good when compared to over cordless vacuums. The way in which Hoover have stated their figures is standard across most manufacturers.
